Information

This was the first clash between these two archrivals since the finals of the 1980 Brazilian National First Division Championship. Atlético Mineiro arrived in Rio de Janeiro counting on a great exhibition of its fantastic trio of Reinaldo, considered the best Brazilian striker at the time, Toninho Cerezo, simply a legend for the Seleção and for almost every team he played for, and Éder, a genius who made the Atlético fans forget Paulo Isidoro's departure one year before and who would be one of the core pieces of the 1982 Brazilian WC team. The Flamengo of Zico, Adílio, Andrade and Nunes added the 1974 WC starter and legendary Palmeiras and Atlético de Madrid player Luís Pereira back in 1981, but the Rubronegro would play with 3 major scratches: Leandro, recovering from a car accident, Tita, recovering from an injury, and Júnior, who didn't play as he was amidst contract talks with Flamengo. A young Mozer was improvised as a left defender in Júnior's absence.
